A unique fraud detection tool, Clear Location compares addresses provided by an applicant during an online transaction against locations that can be captured by other methods. More specifically, Clear Location works by calculating the distances between the applicant’s home address, work address, IP address, and mobile phone location to identify anomalies.
“ClearLocation takes identity verification to a whole new level,” said Lan Luangsouphom, director of product management at Clarity Services. “Now a fraudster can’t steal an identity from someone across the country or across the world. Unless the fraud attempt is from a location that is in close proximity to the real person, Clear Location will flag it as a risky transaction.”
While device identification continues to be an important component in detecting fraud, mobile phone location adds one more layer of protection. In early trials, Clarity found that when a mobile device is more than 40 miles from a loan applicant’s home address, the risk of default is three times higher.
To obtain an applicant’s mobile phone location, Clarity has partnered with Zumigo, Inc., a location-based management company. “We are excited to support Clarity and their partners with new tools to prevent financial fraud,” said Chirag Bakshi, CEO of Zumigo. “Our mobile technology can verify consumer’s application data including location, giving those that use it a competitive advantage.”
